For a couple of years I have kept a journal in which I make drawings from photos I take on walks and visits I have made. A journal is a great way to develop drawing skills without any pressure and lets you add comments about what you have seen and done. I use it to learn about the things I photograph. I look up the insects, birds and fungi I've seen and add details so that I can learn more about them.

Build up layers and don't push too hard.

There is such a variety of journals available the choice is down to you. I bought my first journal from a National Trust site that I visited and loved the leather cover with the key on the front. For my next journal I wanted something similiar but wanted it to be bigger. I write on the one side and draw on the other.
If you want to use watercolour then I would suggest you look for journals that have paper that is suitable for watercolour.
